Science, Medicine and Culture behind the ayahuasca retreats

Ayahuasca Healing

According to Dr Gabor Mate, Canadian psychiatrist specialist in addictions, Ayahuasca can heal all manners of diseases, from cancer to addictions. He sustains that for Western Medicine, diseases are “abnormalities that occur either due to external causes such as a bacterium or a toxin, or they’re accidental or due to bad luck, or their due to genetics”, recognising all these factors as external and biological, therefore causes and treatments are only in the biological field.

Ayahuasca Medicine

Ayahuasca extends the common concept of “medicine as it aims to put in order body, mind and spirit with the past, present and future. Ayahuasca is not meant to be a replacement for western medicines nor we try to “westernalize” it, as its approach to the healing process of a person involves a completely different paradigm.

Testimonials

I stayed at Maya last autumn for my very first Aya experience and I had an incredible time..

I stayed at Maya last autumn for my very first Aya experience and I had an incredible time. I really went without any expectations, other than to surrender to the Mother for an inside out deep cleansing. Which is excactly what I received – and on so many levels. As well as Aya I had San Pedro, Kampo (very powerful!) and tobacco purges. Each helped me heal from a medical condition that usually takes months or even years to recover from.

Accommodation – was very comfortable – warm and dry and great mattresses!
Showers were lovely.

The whole property was always clean and well cared for.

The environment is amazing – a beautiful lake for swimming after the medicines was not only therapeutic to bathe in, it was absolutely gorgeous to wander around in as well.

Naho’s cooking is out of this world. Each meal beautifully prepared to fit the Aya DIET and so so tasty. You get hungry doing medicine work and so meal times are a time to treasure. Naho is very skilled at providing great nourishing food and plenty of it. One of the many highlights for me!

Brett always has time to listen and he was incredible supportive to me – and my fellow travellers – at each ceremony. I always felt safe and looked after. He was always around at other times too, ready to listen and be supportive.

Isidoro was a brilliant shaman and I particularly loved his singing of the icaros.
Highly recommended experience.

So my advice to anyone considering trying Aya is to go to a place that is recommended to you. And to trust in the natural healing ability of this incredible plant medicine. Get out of your own way. And don’t jump into the fear… anything you will see is from inside of you. So don’t identify yourself with your fear. Remain an observer and you’ll have a blast – however challenging the experience might be.

There will be times of bliss, and at other times you’ll wonder what the hell you’re doing there. Par for the course. Just surrender, let go and let the consciousness of the plants work their magic.

I appreciate most the lack of ego that I found there, felling SECURE by watching the care and decency that the women were treated with by the shaman and the owner

I returned from here 2 days ago, and I had a great experience !
I was at Maya Retreat Iquitos for 14 days and I had 5 ayahuasca ceremonies 1 San Pedro and 2 Sapo. I went there as opposed to other centers based solely on my instinct and due to the fact that I couldn’t find any negative feedback on line about them.
My instinct was based on the fact that the place looked neat and I could sense an ego free environment from the pictures!
I was a bit unsure that they will be qualified in shamanic aspect of ayahuasca and also in the quality of the brew, but I was willing to risk it, so I went there.
I arrived late at night and there was someone to pick me up from the airport in Iquitos and deliver me safe to the Center.
The rooms are new and comfortable, Naho does a great job cooking so food is amazingly clean and tasty. Brett has this superhuman ability to empathize with anyone and he is a very patient hoast, giving all the time I needed and never rushing me. Ishidoro, the shaman, is only 31 years old but one can feel a deep wisdom and maturity behind his sharp eyes, he is very knowledgable and experienced in “curanderismo” , working with a multitude of plants and insects as medicine.
The ayahuasca brew, San Pedro and Sapo are all made on the property and are very potent as opposed to being bought from outside, which is a big plus, one can feel the love and care applied there :)
Overall I appreciate most the lack of ego that I found there, felling SECURE by watching the care and decency that the women were treated with by the shaman and the owner, a remarkable aspect not to be taken lightly. I have heard so many stories about women being abused while under the effect of the medicine, so this is very relevant for a female when she makes a decision based on personal safety !
A great personal experience for me! I felt like I went in 3/4 full of wellness and I came out overflowing of it. Also I felt I got some of my sense of wonder back and that was no easy task, and it was a result of the harmonious human interaction that I experienced while there!
Thank you Brett and Naho!
I will be seeing you again….!

I’ve been working with ayahuasca for about 15 years, having experienced different rituals and locations, the Peruvian Amazonian Rainforest was always on my mind and I couldn’t have found a better place than Maya Retreat for my first time in Peru

I’ve been working with ayahuasca for about 15 years, having experienced different  rituals and locations,  the Peruvian Amazonian Rainforest was always on my mind and I couldn’t have found a better place than Maya Retreat for my first time in Peru’. I Have to admit  it was quite bizarre at first, as soon as we landed at Iquitos, to meet people “flyering” for ayahuasca ceremonies as if they were parties, but from the very first moment Brett picked us up with the moto-furgón at the airport until he dropped us off after 12 days, everything turned out to be just MAGICAL…

It was fantastic, only after 21 kms we arrived in Paradise without  having to spend 3 days on a boat up  the river to reach the retreat, I wouldn´t have had the time to do that… It´s remarkable what the guys, have built in just one year… The “maloca” with its spiral ceiling and incredible energy, the most amazing jungle kitchen, the cozy Big House and meeting point, our well sorted and private rooms, the dry toilets, the showers, the POND!!! and everything well mixed with a dense jungle with all its ABUNDANCE…

Even though my initial idea was going to learn about the benefits of kambô, i ended up taking the 10 (happily rose up to 12) days retreat and, of course, achieved much more than what i was looking for…

Thumbs up for the programme the guys have created, it´s beautifully designed, very well scheduled, seriously run and complete: tobacco purge, flower baths, Aya, Kambô and San Pedro rituals!!

I´d like to remark how well informed and how supportive you are, I felt safe in your hands, my main feeling to you is GRATITUDE…

And talking about the people, they´re the best of all i have already mentioned about Maya wonders… the “always ready and with a wide smile” helper Eddie; the unstoppable Ishi & Bella, the dogs. The shaman, shaman and gran curandero, words will never be enough to appreciate your great healing, the knowledge you have shared and your confidence… the most hospitable people in the world: sister Naho & brother Brett, full of energy, working hard from morning to evening, with an eternal smile and so loving and loveable, so generous, so caring, so respectful, so wise and so humble… For last and never least, what a blessing it was to have the chance to have as co-hosts my dear cosmic bro Luca and cosmic sis Julia, great warriors and journey´s partners… in Amazonas everything is a matter of TRUST and i surrendered, you´re such a good team!!

I will be definitely going back, the programme for 28 days sounds super interesting and Maya Retreat Iquitos is probably the best soul/mind/body SPA ever…

Ayahuasca would relight the flame of my soul and let me be the person I truly am but couldn’t possible embody in that current state.

I was initially introduced to Ayahuasca by close friends in 2010 after they traveled South America and came back exclaiming I HAD to take this medicine. Knowing my back story, and knowing me inside out, they knew this was the way to finally come to terms with the clinical depression I suffered following a harrowing eating disorder in my teenage years. They knew explicitly, without doubt, Ayahuasca would relight the flame of my soul and let me be the person I truly am but couldn’t possible embody in that current state.

The centre itself is a beautiful, comfortable and authentic area in all the ways you could hope and more. The bedrooms are clean, neat and clear, the perfect place to rest after a long day and night delving into your own psyche. The pond looks like a movie set, placid and inspirational and ideal for reflecting on life before, during and after your stay. The food is glorious and Naho has made an incredible job sourcing and experimenting with the abundance of jungle offerings to create a menu as delicious as it is nourishing. Dinnertimes are fun and comforting and sharing stories with your fellow guests and Brett and Naho themselves will without doubt be the highlight of every day at Maya.

The support I received there and the support available to me since leaving has been an endless help, it’s not easy to leave the cocoon of Maya and your magical jungle life and return the real world, it’s something you must spend time preparing mentally for at the centre. The most important part for me has been making sure I have thought systems in order as I leave and en route home to make it easy to bring my mind and body back to the spiritual centre they are set upon at Maya. You should never be afraid to ask for help following your stay, Brett and Naho are the most nurturing and understanding pair and you will know when you leave that they are your friends for life.

Everyone at Maya Ayahuasca made me feel so welcome and helped me understand my experience with genuine warmth and deeply informed intelligence

“As an atheist I’ve long felt that there is a certain spiritual element missing in my life. A close friend told me about Ayahuasca, and I felt strongly this was something I should explore. Everyone at Maya Ayahuasca made me feel so welcome and helped me understand my experience with genuine warmth and deeply informed intelligence. And the site is possibly the most beautiful place on Earth! I’ll definitely be going back, I have so much still to learn.”

Thanks to the masterful guidance of the shaman the curandero and under the loving care from Brett and Naho I have opened the door to the realm of the sacred medicine plants

Testimonials

It s been 2 weeks since I left the retreat and the dust has settled. Having gone back to my western lifestyle I cant shake a certain feeling of nostalgia, I long for these magic days spent at Maya, I wish I could have stayed longer.
It s been a pretty intense week, filled with new experiences, a rollercoaster of emotions, and definitive changes in my perception of the world.
Thanks to the masterful guidance of the shaman the curandero and under the loving care from Brett and Naho I have opened the door to the realm of the sacred medicine plants. It s a bright world of healing, wisdom, light, love, teaching and humility and I am eager to dive deeper into it; this is just the begining for me.
I left the retreat feeling grateful and full of love for everyone I shared these moments with and will come back soon. 2 weeks later the feeling gratitude towards the world persist and I am still filled with positive energy.
Chosen moments:

  • Naho’s chicken soup! (and all the other plates that magicaly come out of her jungle kitchen)
  • Brett’s ability to listen to you with that gentle smile of his that makes you comfortable to confide
  • Luca’s beautifull guitar playing and singing
  • the unstoppable laugh I shared with the other attendants to the retreat a special afternoon
  • that moment after the ceremony when we all regroup sharing experiences, helping and conforting or sometimes just listening. There’s magic happening here.

Peace
